The Abby Church of Saint-Denis
• An example of an Early Gothic Church
• Great symbolic significance for the French monarchy as the Benedict monastery.
o Few miles north of central Paris.
o Tombs of French Kings and his court, regalia of the French crown, and relics of Saint Denis who was the first Bishop of France.
• 1130’s new construction in direction of Abbot Sugar.
o Received substantial annual revenues from town inhabitants. Other funds from royal coffers and fellow clerics.
o Established free housing on abbey estates to attract workers.
• Began rebuilding in 1135: new west façade and narthex completed.
o Norman tripartite façade design combined with sculptured portals.
o Two towers, round window, and narrative sculpture over three portals.
o Ribbed groin vaults over both square and rectangular bays within narthex.
o Much of the sculpture was damaged or destroyed by the 18th century and the north tower was removed in the 19th century.
